Chapter Eighteen

Charlie Day drove in silence toward Sparrow Springs. Glancing over at the empty seat beside her, she wondered how close Tristan Hale was to wrapping up the investigation they’d been working before Calloway had asked her to lead the Operation Sparrow Slayer task force.

Now that the case was no longer cold, and two women had been killed in the last week, she could use some help.

New developments in the case were happening fast, and she’d had little time to review the old case files, or to get herself up to date on the suspects and theories identified during the original investigation.

And Hale always makes such a good sounding board.

A faint smile crossed her face at the thought, then quickly vanished as she turned onto Stoneybrook Drive and saw the police cars, news vans, and milling onlookers awaiting her.

Pulling up behind a Sparrow Springs PD patrol car, she saw Bridget and Gage standing on the driveway.

“Has Jason and the evidence response team arrived, yet?” Charlie asked as she joined them on the hot asphalt. “It’s too hot out here to be waiting around.”

“I certainly second that opinion,” an impatient voice said beside her. “Time is ticking and we’re all just standing here.”

A tall, solid woman with short gray hair stood a few feet away. She wore an elegantly tailored pantsuit and was holding one hand up to shield her eyes from the sun while tapping a message into her phone with the other hand.

“Charlie, have you met Joni Ziegler, the Sparrow Springs chief of police?” Bridget asked with forced cheerfulness. “Chief Zeigler, this is Special Agent Charlie Day. She’s running the task force.”

Dropping her phone into the pocket of her expensive jacket, Zeigler turned hard brown eyes on Charlie, who offered a perfunctory nod in response to the introduction.

Based on the information she’d reviewed thus far in the case files, she was confident that Zeigler and her team had botched the original investigation.

For one thing, the obvious link between Fabio Peretti and the murder victims had been briefly mentioned and then summarily dismissed with no meaningful follow-up.

She wasn’t about to waste time appeasing a woman who couldn’t be bothered to run a proper investigation.

“Agent Day, I was told you don’t want anyone going into the house until your response team arrived,” Zeigler said in an accusatory voice. “But I insist on-”

The police chief’s words were drowned out by a loud honk.

Looking around, Charlie exhaled in relief at the sight of the big white truck bumping up onto the curb.

Jason Chan was at the wheel, and he honked again in an effort to clear the path in front of him so that the blocky white vehicle could get closer to the house.

“That’s our team now,” Charlie said, waving for everyone to move back. “If you can just give us some room…”

Zeigler’s back stiffened at the suggestion she might be in the way, but as the big truck pulled onto the driveway, the police chief had no choice but to step back or get run over.
